Weaving

In this workshop participants will weave a small area rug using blue jeans, learning weaving basics while crafting a timeless + useful object. Perfect for beginning weavers, denim devotees, and re-purposing aficionados.

Drafting is a class for weavers of all levels who are ready to delve further into the math and logic behind planning a weaving. Students will learn how to read weave drafts, practice drawing drafts, and leave with an understanding of how to create their own draft so that they can plan personal projects.

In this class students will learn different techniques to create handwoven garments, such as shape weaving, tapestry, and different finishing techniques. Class will also cover project planning and yarn calculations, different types of fibers/materials and how to explore their properties, and minimum waste design techniques. Class time and demos will be supplemented with resources for independent exploration.

Students should have some weaving experience, either on a frame or floor loom.

In this class, students will learn how to design and hand weave their own trims, belts and straps using the Inkle Loom. Students curious about the basics of the woven structure will enjoy this warp-faced weaving process. Open to beginners or seasoned weavers curious about a new process, Inkle Weaving is a fun opportunity to explore new technique. Your instructor will also share some historical and contemporary uses of the Inkle Loom and assist with project planning.

Learn how to weave cloth on a floor loom! In this 12hour course, students will learn the principles of hand-weaving on a 4 harness floor loom, including how to wind your own warp, dress the loom, and explore basic weave structures—plain weave, basket weave, ribs and twills.

In this intermediate class, you will get to design and create a weaving project of your choice. With the guidance of the instructor, you will plan your project, dress your loom, and complete your weaving, giving you the chance to further explore the weave structures, patterns, and techniques that you are interested in. Depending on the complexity of the weaving project, students may need to come in for Open Studio time outside of class in order to leave with a finished piece.

Pre-Requisite: Weaving 101 at TAC, or equivalent experience.

Are you novice weaver and are ready for the next step? This is the right follow-up class. In this class, students will continue their knowledge of weaving techniques, further exploring woven design options, through experimenting with color and texture. Students will dress their own loom, learn proper technique for painting their warp and weft with dyes and inks to create imagery or pattern for their woven cloth, and other weaving techniques such as tapestry and pile weaving. Depending on the complexity of the weaving project, students may need to come in for Open Studio time outside of class in order to leave with a finished piece.

Pre-Requisite: Weaving 101, or equivalent weaving experience

Weaving 104: Garments class is an introduction on how to design and weave small garments on a floor loom. Students will learn how to plan a weaving project, choose fibers based on their qualities, shape a garment on the loom, discover finishing techniques, and leave with a hand-woven garment based on their vision.

Pre-Requisite: Weaving 101, or equivalent weaving experience

Ikat means both the finished fabric and the action of tying and knotting threads before dyeing, in Indonesian language. Ikat is a weaving technique in which warp, weft, or both are tie-dyed in order to create a pattern, which will form while weaving. This technique has been used for thousands of years all over the world. Students will learn Ikat resist and dyeing methods in this class full of color and pattern! Depending on the complexity of the weaving project, students may need to come in for Open Studio time outside of class in order to leave with a finished piece.

Pre-Requisite: Weaving 101, or equivalent weaving experience

Ready to move on to more advanced weaving? If you’ve taken any of the beginner Weaving courses at TAC, or have prior experience dressing looms and pattern reading, this class is perfect for you! Students will focus on the double weave technique, which allows you to weave two layers simultaneously, and exceed the weaving width of your loom, create pockets, etc. Depending on the complexity of the weaving project, students may need to come in for Open Studio time outside of class in order to leave with a finished piece.

Pre-Requisite: Weaving 101 or equivalent sewing experience

In this workshop you’ll learn basic weaving techniques on a two harness floor loom, exploring woven design options, through experimenting with color and texture. Students will work on pre dressed looms, and experiment painting their warp with textile inks to create imagery or pattern for their woven swatch. A great introduction for new weavers, no experience is necessary!
