Hand Quilting

In this class, you will learn the basics skills of hand quilting, such as pinning, how to make binding, and different methods of connecting quilting layers. Students will create their own small quilt block where you can experiment with different quilting techniques. No prior experience is necessary.

Sewing 101

In the Sewing 101 course students will learn the essential skills of sewing: how to use a sewing machine, basic pattern reading and sewing construction while creating a simple project, such as a fully lined tote or a simple A line tank top or dress.

Sewing 102: Dresses

Have you taken Sewing 101 or have experience sewing and are ready for a new challenge? In this class, students will go deeper into construction techniques and patterns, and through creating a dress. Students will chose from 3 different dress patterns, with slightly different silhouettes for various body types, but all exploring similar techniques. Some of the techniques taught include zippers and darts.

Pre-Requisite: Sewing 101 or basic sewing experience.

Sewing 103: Design a Bag

Do you find yourself admiring the items you can really use in life? That great duffle bag that holds all of your stuff or a sturdy backpack you can throw on and take to the beach or just a really nice tote made to withstand the everyday trudging through the streets of NYC? In this class you can design your very own and learn how to make it!

We will be learning about how to select the correct fabric, produce strong seams, make awesome pockets and also set in zippers. This class allows students to explore the more utilitarian side of sewing and culminates in producing a uniquely designed piece. Some sewing experience necessary

Pre-Requisite: Sewing 101 or equivalent sewing experience (sewing machine and basic construction knowledge)

Sewing 201: Draping

In this class, students will advance their skills by learning to drape their own clothing over a dress form. Students will learn the fundamentals of fashion draping, including understanding grainline, draping on the bias, and using styling tape. The instructor will work with each student to develop a final design project which will then be turned into a sewing pattern.This class will focus on the dress form, and students will make a sample draped blouse or skirt.

Pre-Requisite: Sewing 101 or solid knowledge of sewing construction techniques.

Sewing 202: Pattern Making

Do you know the basics of draping and construction? Now it’s time for the next step. In this 12 hour class, students will learn how to draft a basic one-dart skirt sloper—a wardrobe essential—using your their own measurements. Students will sew a mock-up of their design in muslin and learn how to make fit adjustments. The instructor will also cover how to create an A-line skirt pattern variation based on your original sloper.

Pre-Requisite: Sewing 101, 201: Draping or equivalent experience.
