Textile Arts Center’s Work in Progress (TAC WIP) is a window into the studio practice of contemporary artists and designers that engages the public in a dialogue with the field of textiles.
For one month, WIP residents develop and showcase their work and practice in TAC’s Brooklyn studio, located in Gowanus, a neighborhood with a thriving arts community. Residents receive a personal studio space and 24hr access to the Brooklyn studio, on top of a 30% adult classes discount, while being part of a community space inspired by a love and dedication for textiles. As part of the program, WIP residents host events, lectures, and workshops that relate to their practice for the community.

Hilla Shapira is a wearable and textile artist. Originally from Tel-Aviv, Israel, and is currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Her work deals with the relationships between common design and body regimen. By making functional mundane objects she questions design norms and the political aspects of things. She has presented her work in Israel, Europe, and the USA including: Art Basel (Miami, FL), Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art (Philadelphia, PA), NY Textile Month (NYC, NY), Jerusalem Design Week (Jerusalem, Israel), NY Jewelry week (NYC, NY), Little Berlin Gallery, (Philadelphia, PA), Depo2015 (Pilsen, Czech Republic), Neve Schechter Gallery (Tel-Aviv, Israel), Hansen House (Jerusalem, Israel), Textile Arts Center (Brooklyn, NY) and Wasserman Projects (Detroit, MI). She was AIR in Carrizozo residency (Carrizozo, NM), Popps Packing (Hamtramck, MI), Makerspace (Brooklyn, NY) and Neve Schechter center (Tel-Aviv, Israel). She received her BFA in Fashion from Bezalel Academy, Jerusalem, Israel and her MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy, Bloomfield-Hills MI, USA. Shapira's work had been featured in different publications including: Hyperallergic Magazine, NY Jewish Week, Metalsmith Magazine, Portfolio Magazine, Haaretz, and the Jerusalem Post.
Romina Chuls (1991, Lima) is a researcher and multidisciplinary artist. Her work focuses on postcolonial gender issues in Peru and Latin America. She holds an M.A. in Arts Politics from NYU Tisch School of the Arts (2022). She earned a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, majoring in painting, from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú in 2016. In 2021, she was granted the AAUW International Fellowship to support her studies at NYU and her research on anti-colonial pregnancy interruption practices. She is currently participating in the A.I.R. Gallery fellowship program, which culminates in a solo show in 2026.
Her solo shows include Parir los Pétalos (2023), an exhibition that articulates an understanding of abortion as part of a collective and more-than-human fertility cycle, at Real Art Ways, Hartford; Clandestinas (2020), a project that portrays the emotional stage of being pregnant with an unwanted being in a context where abortion is criminalized, at Galería Forum, Lima; and Tierra Incógnita (2017) at Fundación Euroidiomas, Lima. Her work has been shown in spaces such as Kunstraum (NYC, USA), at Palácio e Centro e Centro Cultural Vila Flor (Guimaraes, Portugal), at Museo de Sitio Julio C. Tello (Paracas, Peru) and Matamoros (Oaxaca, México).
