Ten Years of Brooklyn Lace Guild marks an innovative, contemporary lace exhibition of the artist-members of Brooklyn Lace Guild at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn, NY, opening October 17. This exhibition traces the arc of lacemaking as a contemporary practice and demonstrates the guild’s growth from ten attendees at their first meeting in 2016 to over 100 members today. The works honor the history of lace, the lacemakers, and their stories. The artists integrate and expand on traditional processes through a diverse, multifaceted, present-day lens.
Artists include: Sasha Baskin, Padina Bondar, Emma Cali, Jen Chen-su Huang, Jodi Colella, Lenka Curtin, Peggy Fussell, August Honey, Glorimar Garcia, Zoe Gras, Sarah J. Hull, Ellyane Hutchinson, Elena Kanagy-Loux, Amy Keefer, Layla Nk, Elliot Lovegrove, Renee Magnanti, Patricia Miranda, Tara Nadolny, Zehra Naqvi, Cajah Reed, Kasuni Rathnasuriya (KÚR New York) and Devon Thein.
Contemporary approaches include Cajah Reed’s architectural “Converging Filaments” created with copper wire and fishing line; Elliot Lovegrove’s “Postal Project” invites viewers to send lace through the mail; and Amy Susan Keefer’s four-year project of embroidered “Fishnets,” a meditation on resistance begun the day Roe v. Wade was overturned. Tara Nadolny’s “per Celestis” renders her infant daughter’s foot in lace; and Zehra Naqvi’s “What does it feel like to live inside of a pomegranate” considers heritage and identity. Many artists reinterpret historical lace motifs, such as Devon Thein’s "Albrecht and Isabella redux,” and Layla Nk’s retellings of mythology in “What Should She Do If A Snake Desires Her (Step Four).”
The exhibition is curated by Elena Kanagy-Loux, Ellyane Hutchinson, Patricia Miranda, and Sasha Baskin and is supported by Layla Nk and Amy Susan Keefer. Brooklyn Lace Guild member Patricia Miranda is WIP resident at the Textile Arts Center for the month of October.
The Brooklyn Lace Guild was founded in 2016 by Elena Kanagy-Loux, Kaelyn Garcia, and Devon Thein. Brooklyn Lace Guild is devoted to the preservation of traditional lacemaking. The Guild holds monthly meetings to analyze, discuss, and make lace, both historic and modern. Our members include antique lace collectors, historic dress enthusiasts, fashion and textile designers, fiber artists, historians, and more. We share a love of the many complex and delicate techniques encompassed in the world of lace. All are welcome to join us!
The inaugural Ten-Year Anniversary Exhibition premiered at the Gorlice Cultural Center, World Lace Festival, Poland, in August 2026.
