This February 5-15, 2020, join Thread Caravan’s newest cultural craft adventure: an immersive textile experience set in the ever-inspiring cities of Jaipur and Bagru in the state of Rajasthan, in northwestern India.
Guests will be hosted by Thread Caravan and Tribalfare as they spend their days learning about and practicing the age-old crafts of wood block carving, natural dyeing and block printing alongside skilled artisan instructors in communities where these crafts have been practiced for generations.
The trip will begin with sightseeing in Jaipur, giving guests the opportunity to ground themselves in India and gather inspiration for the multi-day workshop to follow.
During the workshop, guests will dive into the history and processes of block printing in Bagru and India, with emphasis on understanding the essential components of natural dyes — the local water, climate and flora. Processes will include teak wood block carving, scouring and mordanting fabrics, making an organic indigo dye vat, preparing binders and printing inks, block printing a cotton scarf with the inks, dyeing with flowers, barks, roots and insect dyes, tie and dye, and mud resist painting for cold dyes.
When not immersed in textiles, guests will dive into history, architecture, food and other cultural traditions that make this part of northwestern India so unique.
The trip is open to all skill levels and creative backgrounds. Space is limited to 10 guests and only 4 spaces remain. This experience includes comfortable and private boutique hotel accommodation, all meals, 2 guides, in-country transportation and a mindfully-crafted itinerary sure to inspire!
