Textile Arts Center Summer Camp welcomes campers ages 5-12 to create and connect with the world of contemporary and historical textiles in interactive and exciting week long programs.
With each new session of camp your child will create an in depth project in Weaving Class or Textile Surface Design Class, as well as daily craft projects using fiber and textile processes and concepts drawn from the exhibition we visit on our field trip.
Textiles exist in the world of utility as well as fine art and exist in nearly every aspect of our everyday life. Learning about how something is made and the labor that goes into it promotes appreciation of makers and our ecological impact. We empower youth to see themselves as the makers and innovators of the future and to continue their relationship with textiles well after their week at TAC.
TAC staffers are all working artists, designers, researchers, creative practitioners, trained and passionate about working with creative young people. We pride ourselves on creating a nurturing camp community with attention to each individual while fostering an engaging group dynamic. Campers are sure to leave with incredible textiles, great friendships, and lasting memories.
Unique to TAC Summer Camp, our weekly FIELD TRIPS are an integral part of the TAC Summer Camp experience. Field trips are incorporated into every aspect of project planning and provide the lense through which we view each weeks activities.
TAC field trips are thrilling, often internationally acclaimed shows and exhibitions and are something campers and staff look forward to. Visiting museums allows us to feel connected as citizens of the world; experiencing other cultures, learning about one another’s experiences, and expanding our worldview.
Our visits to textile related exhibitions around the city allow for creative thinking and critical dialogue between campers, counselors, and museum staff. Inquiry based and object based learning offers kids of TAC genuine opportunities to make connections with the artwork, and interact with the vibrant and diverse art scene of New York City. Our journey’s reinforce our Summer Camp community, and the bonds made at camp.
TAC Summer Camp provides plenty of time to let loose and enjoy! There is ample opportunity each day forKids of TAC to enjoy summer outdoors at our local parks and playgrounds. In addition to free play, we engage campers in community building activities throughout the week to foster friendship and engage in group activities. All of our activities and interactions are based on a foundation of mutual respect, a desire to learn and have fun.
Friday’s are OPEN STUDIO day at TAC. It is a special time for reflection on process and projects, showcasing the fruits of each camper's labor. Family and friends are welcome to watch the photo slideshow of our week at camp, see our tools, touch our materials, and hear what inspiration we gained from our field trip that week. It’s a time to share and be proud together!
