    About Our Field Trips

The educational mission of the Textile Arts Center is to promote and expand the understanding and appreciation of Textile Art, and the traditional skills associated with the treatment and production of cloth.

We invite NYC public and private schools to schedule field trips to Textile Arts Center to discover the exciting tradition of cloth-making in American history and around the world through Weaving and Dyeing.

Our Brooklyn location only is available for field trips on weekdays preferably in the morning hours.  Minimum of 10 students, maximum of 30.

Cost: $10 per student; includes several demonstrations, a lively lesson and discussion, and a full hour of hands on work in pairs or small groups. Please inquire about our sliding scale rates.

To schedule a field trip please fill out this handy online form and someone from TAC will be in touch soon!

    Hand Weaving on A Loom

Step back in time on this field trip and try making your own fabric. Students will see a yarn-spinning demo, hear a short but fascinating history of the art, and consider the origins of yarn and clothes that we are in contact with daily. Students will weave in pairs on full-size looms like the looms that were in use before the Industrial Revolution.

Please contact us to find out more about how we can help you integrate your field trip into your class curriculum.

    The Art of Natural Dyeing

This class is a fun and exciting introduction to identifying various native plants and using them to dye cloth. The lesson demonstrates the ease and accessibility of dying fiber in a typical kitchen using safe, cheap and readily available ingredients. It opens students' eyes to the natural bounty around them and the need to protect it through practices that support and promote sustainability and environmental responsibility.
