Work In Progress: Andrew Benincasa
If you walked by our studio in the West Village this past month, you probably noticed the large scale cutting wall by the window, and the amazingly detailed works on paper by current Work In Progress featured artist: Andrew Benincasa.
Andrew Benincasa is a paper-cut artist and illustrator, and applies his techniques in many formats: from lightbox set-pieces to animations, shadow puppet shows to album artwork, posters, cards, and more…
For his Work In Progress installation, Andrew built a large scale vertical cutting wall, so he could work on larger projects. All the tools involved and steps of the process are featured on his studio display. Andrew can be seen regularly busy at work in his WiP studio, as his work continues to change and evolve with each day of his residency.
” My compositions have a range of inspirations, and make a lot of use of textures and patterns, ranging from the natural textures of the grains of wood to the surface currents of water, to human-made designs of ancient ornament, to microscopic photography, to textile weaves.” - Andrew Benincasa
Andrew Benincasa has been in residency with the Work In Progress for the month of June and will extend until July 18th. For more updates on his work, paper-cutting workshops and his open hours at TAC, follow him on instagram @andrewbenincasa . Or stop by TAC Manhattan on Saturdays, 2-5PM to meet him!
