Natural Basket Making with Matt Tommey

This weekend here at Textile Arts Center, students came in and learned about basket making from artist Matt Tommey. His work focuses on traditional Appalachian craft using all natural materials like vines (kudzu, wisteria, grapevine), branches (birch, oak, ash & poplar), long leaf pine needles and poplar bark. The result is something that has the spirit of tradition while also being surprisingly contemporary.  Students worked with these materials, including fibers if they chose, to create whimsical little baskets of all sizes and shapes.

A variety of natural materials for weaving.

Students get to work weaving their baskets.

A finished creation! Thanks, Matt, for a great class!
