Dyeing with Tara St. James + Smack Mellon girls

Sorry for the down time yesterday! Back in action…

Last week was crazy busy preparing for the Sewing Seeds Fundraiser event. But there was still time for some fun educational moments.

Tara St James, from Study NY stopped by our Brooklyn studio Sarah and Ronisha, two high-schoolers spending the semester with Tara, part of the Smack Mellon program Art Ready. Art Ready is an artist mentorship program, in which high-school students are given the opportunity to work and learn with visual artists in different fields.

Tara had been teaching the girls the ins-and-outs of being a Fashion Designer, focusing on sustainable production techniques. Last week, Tara brought the girls to TAC to learn more about dyeing with natural dyes, while naturally dyeing a pair of silk trousers for the fundraiser silent auction (thank you, Tara!).

We experimented with dyeing using tea bags (rich in tannins), rust dyeing with an iron solution made of rusty nails and the mysterious indigo! The results were amazing and very inspiring!
